A red, a white, and a rosé walk into a bar

Dry January. It’s a thing. Every January thousands around the globe abstain from alcohol for an entire month. I can’t say I’ve ever tried it myself. You see, my birthday is in January, and what good is a birthday if you can’t toast with some champagne? But for those of you who have been partaking in dry January (or even slightly-less-wet-January) then I have a variety of options compiled for you to kickstart your return to booze.

Let us start with the white wine. Mulderbosch Chenin Blanc (Steen op Hout) 2022. A bright and punchy wine with zesty notes of pineapple, pear, and citrus. On the palate it keeps things lively by being quite acidic and full of zing. Retailing between R87 to R95 a bottle this wine is great value for money. Keep a lookout for it in liquor stores and snag a bottle for your cellar. Perfect paired with linefish, spicy asian noodles or a delicious cheese board.

Everyone loves a rosé in the summer and the Quando Mourvedre rosé is a fantastic wine to sip on a slow afternoon while watching the sunset. Juicy and fresh with flavours of strawberries, Turkish delight and rose this wine is incredibly moreish. Before you know it the entire bottle will have easily slipped away. Pair this wine with a fresh pear and rocket salad or enjoy it with crackers and snoek pate. This wine is fantastic for a sundowner session or picnic with friends and is easy on the pocket as well. For R76 a bottle it is well worth a drive out to La Verne Wine Boutique.

Of course we cannot forget the red. Ormonde Winery is doing some fantastic wines at the moment but I feel that we need to shine the spotlight on their Ondine Grenache. This slightly spicy and fruity red is beautifully light and balanced. Served chilled on a hot afternoon it is heaven – perfect for the characteristically warm month of February. And what better place to enjoy it than Ormonde winery itself? Located on the outskirts of the picturesque town of Darling, you can enjoy views of the rolling countryside while ensconced on the terrace on a comfy couch with a charcuterie board. I would be hard-pressed to name a better way to spend an afternoon.

The Mulderbosch Chenin Blanc, Quando Mourvedre rosé and Ondine Grenache are available at most liquor outlets or can be purchased directly from the cellars. Please enjoy responsibly.
